Message from the President
Message from the President
Are you interested in people-centered primary care and care about the plight of the people of Africa, as the truly committed family physician you are? Well, Uganda will be hosting the WONCA Africa Conference on 6-8th June 2019 in Kampala, Uganda with the theme “People-centred Primary Care”. We are very excited as it is the first WONCA Africa Conference to be held in East Africa and we want you to show solidarity with our colleagues in this part of Africa by being there.
Not only is this theme and conference an opportunity to focus our collective minds on a globally important topic, considering the strong policy shift to universal health coverage, but also a chance to strengthen WONCA networks and advocacy. A key message must be “every family deserves a family doctor-led team”. The programme will include leading lights in WONCA across the world, including the incoming WONCA World President and various experts in WONCA Working Parties who will share best practice from around the world.
Prof. Shabir Moosa
Wonca Africa President
It is also a chance for Africans to share the wonderful work being done by them in various countries of Africa. We urge you to register early for the conference and to submit abstracts of your work so that we all may benefit and celebrate the work you do, as an often-unappreciated family doctor in Africa. Urge your colleagues and key stakeholders in your space to also attend. This is a platform to show the world how African family doctors are making people-centered primary care happen, in small ways but cheaper and better than many imagine.
We also want you to make the most of your trip to East Africa. There are inexpensive tourist gems in Uganda, and across East Africa. We urge you to explore the internet for the many tourist destinations and options: from Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda and mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Please register early as the conference is limited in size to ensure that some serious work and relationships are built. It is going to be unforgettable. Share the announcement with all.
On behalf of the WONCA Africa Executive Committee and the Uganda Association of family physicians, we wish you an early welcome.
See you in Kampala 6-8th June 2019!
Message from the Local Convenor
Welcome from the Local Organising Committee
It is a privilege for the Association of The Family Physicians of Uganda to host the 6th WONCA Africa Conference in 2019. We extend a warm welcome to you all to Uganda, ‘The pearl of Africa’. It is a landlocked country with a very fast growing population but with a variety of physical features to appreciate and thus we hope a fitting place for this international conference coming together for sharing of ideas.
The chosen conference theme is ‘People centered primary care’ so that it allows colleagues to share their successes, challenges and innovations in delivering effective primary care to the populations that they serve. Apart from the infectious diseases, our populations are also currently faced with chronic or non-communicable (NCD) diseases which require health systems to have robust primary care. We are therefore hopeful that the interactions among delegates from within and out of Africa on primary care and Family Medicine will indeed impact patient care, primary care research and policy.
Dr Jane Namatovu
BMed, MMed, Convenor
We are particularly delighted by the fact that this meeting will serve as an advocacy platform for quality primary care to students, who will be involved as presenters and local volunteers. They are our future and therefore the sessions will allow them to appreciate and consider the discipline of Family Medicine as an option for their future career. We promise you an enjoyable and memorable conference. Our dream is that you will come in large numbers to Kampala, Uganda at the Kansanga campus of the International University of East Africa.
Message from the Scientific Chair
Dear Friends, Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen, history is being made!
The first ever Wonca Africa Conference in East Africa. MISS only if you MUST! You are all welcome to Uganda for the Wonca Africa 2019 conference. Wonca Africa 2019 conference theme “People-Centred Primary Care” reminds us of our cardinal role as custodians and promoters of primary care. This calls each one us to actively participate in the building of our community of practice as primary care providers for the benefit of wonca world, wonca Africa and our respective member organisations as well as ourselves. This biannual wonca regional conference in Africa provides a platform for us all to present, share experiences and learn from each other as we continue striving to develop and scale up family medicine on the African continent. It is our sincere hope that many colleagues from Africa and beyond will seize this opportunity to present their scholarly work, share experiences, learn from one another and network for future collaborations.
Dr Innocent Besigye
Remember WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER! A special thanks to all who are working on their scientific papers that they plan to present at this important conference. Please submit your abstracts as soon as possible to allow the scientific committee ample time for review and to program accordingly. Many thanks to the Wonca Africa Executive Committee for entrusting us with hosting this historical conference, the first of its kind in East Africa. We promise to do our best to make it memorable. Family medicine in East Africa is growing and the growth must continue.
Come and witness the growth.
